Auckland Trains

New Zealand’s rail network is not a vast one with endless passenger services, but a collection of scenic rail journeys taking you through some unforgettable landscapes. There is little commuter service besides the services running in Wellington and Auckland and a few intercity trains. The Britomart Transport Centre, situated at the bottom of Queen Street and just up from the Ferry Terminal Building, is the main centre to buy tickets and make enquiries in person.

Auckland Trains

The 'Veolia' operated trains run regularly to central, south and west Auckland suburbs from the Britomart rail station. Fares are based on the number of ‘stages’ that you travel.  ‘Ten Trip’ tickets offer a discount for regular travel to the same destination. Various Day Passes are available for single and families giving unlimited travel on the Auckland trains after 9.00am.

Getting Beyond Auckland

The Overlander train connects Auckland to Wellington, transporting passengers through some of Central North Island’s more rural regions and the volcanic Central Plateau. The journey stops at Hamilton, National Park (a gateway to Mount Ruapehu and the Tongariro Alpine Crossing), Ohakune and Palmerston North.

The Observation carriage includes some lounge style seating to relax and enjoy the views. The service leaves three times a week from both Auckland and Wellington all year round. The trains depart at 7.35am and completes the journey at 7.20pm.

Scenic Rail Pass

The Scenic Rail Pass enables you to travel around New Zealand on the Tranz Scenic rail network at your own speed. The pass is ideal for independent travellers wanting to enjoy the calming benefits of train travel. With the pass, you can pick your own route, get on and off where you like, and travel as often as you like within the validity of the ticket.  Both 7 and 14 day options are available.
