Barolo - Auckland
Italian-themed restaurant located in The Langham Hotel. Classy fine-dining with dishes cooked by real Italian chefs. Extensive, premier wine list mixing Italian reds with NZ whites.
A homage to the Slow Food Movement of Italy's Piedmont region, you can tell just how much time and effort goes into creating each perfect dish on Barolo's menu - they are works of art, and deliberately so.
Fresh, local ingredients (including home-grown truffles) are used to recreate legendary Italian dishes such as the Duck Tagliolini and Mushroom Risotto starters, before launching into an assault on the culinary senses with mains of Seared Venison (don't dare ask for it well-done...), Sage-Encrusted Lamb and Prosciutto-Wrapped Chicken.
Equal love is given to the side dishes - where else in Auckland are you going to find Truffle Potato Mash and Creamy Silverbeet With Gorgonzola?
The Tiramisu is a must for 'dolci', although one of the most popular post-dinner delights here, is the 'Formaggi' - six Piedmont cheeses with mustard fruit and crackers.
Complementing such unique and mouthwatering dishes, is an impressive (but not cheap...) wine list, mixing the best of Italian (Barolo itself is "The King Of Wines") with some of New Zealand's finest Chardonnays and Sauvignon Blancs.
You may need deep pockets to dine out here, but it's an experience you (or your taste buds) will not forget in a hurry.
