Auckland Art Gallery is one of the country's largest and most renowned collections of both local and international artists.
Housed in one of Auckland's oldest civic buildings, the gallery first opened in 1880s and since then has been refurbished, redesigned, and adapted to give visitors better access to the more than 15,000 pieces in the gallery's collection.
The gallery is open every day except Christmas Day. Admission is free to the majority of the gallery offers plenty of time to explore the various works and exhibitions, but some special special exhibitions may require an additional paid ticket.
To learn more about the works on show take one of the gallery's free guided tours which run twice a day and take roughly an hour. During the tour, volunteer guides will tell you more about the history of not only the art, but also the artists that created it.
After the tour, visit the Learning Centre which offers more information about how artists see the world and develop their work. Alternatively, simply relax in the gallery's café, which serves an a la carte menu as well as other hot and cold meals, salads, cakes and pastries. An espresso bar on the gallery's second level offers drinks and sweet treats.
The gallery's gift shop stocks posters, prints, and postcards of some of the collection as well as ceramics and homewares by leading New Zealand artists making it the perfect place to buy a unique souvenir.
